Turquoise and White Altered Vintage Quilt
Turquoise and White Altered Vintage Quilt
50 x 70"
This size is perfect to fit atop a twin size bed. Its the right size for a lap quilt for two adults to take a sofa nap.
This unique quilt is handmade by me in the central highlands of Washington State. I don’t use patterns and every quilt I make is spontaneous and composed as it is created. When I found this quilt I recognised its beautiful construction in spite of its boring presentation. So I tie dyed it with a radial pattern and applique.
This quilt is a part of a collection of pieces I made in response to the futurist and constructivist movements of 100 years ago in Europe. A hopeful time after the First World War where innovation and technology provided an optimistic solution to the crisis of modern life. This didn’t seem to pan out. These quilts use the same form language as works from these movements but rely on humble traditional domestic materials rather than avant-garde ones, in hopes of subverting the original message. Implying slow simplicity as an alternative response to our tech heavy contemporary condition.
All of my quilts are made with 2nd hand fabrics sourced from the fashion and interior design industries as well as vintage shops and estate sales. This way I get fabrics unavailable to anyone else and give some rad old fabrics a new life for you to love! The fabrics may carry a visual history of their previous life (wear marks in a pair of old jeans or the red wine stain of a linen tablecloth). These choices are intentional, showing the character of the journey of the fabric.
All of my quilts are intended to be used. They can of course be hung on a wall but I make them to be slept under or picnicked on top of. I wash the one on my bed yearly in the washing machine on cold and gentle, then line dry it and toss it in the dryer quickly to fluff it. I don't recommend doing it more regularly than this. It is well constructed but still it is handmade. Contains cotton fabrics. Light weight batting inside. Do not dry clean.
I love everything I make and I hope you do too.
